Cocaine and Selective Associations: Investigations into a Biological Constraint on Learning with Drug Self-administration and Shock Avoidance as Reinforcers

چکیده
When a tone-light compound was a discriminative stimulus for cocaine-reinforced responding, the light gained most of the control over responding. In contrast, when the compound was an aversive SD for shock-avoidance, tone control increased. In previous studies, tone control also increased when the tone-light compound was made aversive by signaling food-absence. However, that was not the case in Experiment 2 where tone-light signaled cocaine-absence. Experiment 1 produced an interincentive (cocaine vs. shock) selective association with drug self-administration maintained behavior for the first time. This extends the generality of the selective association biological constraint on learning to self-administered drugs. Copyright Information:

The effect of chronic oral administration of verapamil on learning and retrieval in rats using passive avoidance learning task
Verapamil is a drug that blocks L-type calcium channels and selectively inhibits calcium ion entry into the central and peripheral nervous system cells. Verapamil is used acutely and chronically in treatment of some cardiovascular and central nervous system disorders. It has also been shown that acute administration of verapamil has no significant effect on learning and memory in rats, but the ...

متن کاملThe effect of intrahippocampal injection of diarylpropionitrile, a selective estrogen receptor-beta agonist, on passive avoidance learning
Introduction: Neurohormones like testosterone and estradiol have an important role in learning and memory. The hippocampus is essentially involved in learning and memory, and is known to be a target for estradiol actions. Estrogen receptors (ERs) are highly expressed in CA1 of rat hippocampus, and mediate the effects of estrogen on learning and memory. Estradiol receptor belong to a family ...
متن کاملCocaine self-administration abolishes associative neural encoding in the nucleus accumbens necessary for higher-order learning.
BACKGROUND Cocaine use is often associated with diminished cognitive function, persisting even after abstinence from the drug. Likely targets for these changes are the core and shell of the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which are critical for mediating the rewarding aspects of drugs of abuse as well as supporting associative learning. To understand this deficit, we recorded neural activity in the NA...
متن کاملMetabolic mapping of the effects of cocaine during the initial phases of self-administration in the nonhuman primate.
Because most human studies of the neurobiological substrates of the effects of cocaine have been performed with drug-dependent subjects, little information is available about the effects of cocaine in the initial phases of drug use before neuroadaptations to chronic exposure have developed. The purpose of the present study, therefore, was to define the substrates that mediate the initial effect...
